A Lent devotional on John 10:7-10
Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
Gates have long symbolised security and controlled access - think of London’s Admiralty Arch, Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, or Traitors’ Gate at the Tower of London. But gates aren’t just historic landmarks; they represent protection, direction, and the choice of who or what enters.
Throughout history, false teachers and religions have pulled people away from God. But Jesus doesn’t mince His words. He calls them thieves and robbers. His true sheep know His voice and won’t be led astray. A good shepherd leads his flock through the gate - Jesus Himself - because there’s no other way into His kingdom.
Paul told believers to imitate him as he imitated Christ. So, who are we following? And who’s following us? We need to make sure the people we look up to are actually pointing us to Jesus and that we’re doing the same for those who look to us. If our eyes are fixed on Christ, we won’t get sidetracked by human wisdom, culture, or feelings that go against God’s truth.
Jesus is the Gate. Those who enter through Him find safety and green pastures - real life, real peace, real security. The thief only comes to steal, kill and destroy, but Jesus gives life to the full, not in earthly riches, but in hope, love and purpose.
Proverbs 4:23 tells us to guard our hearts, because everything we do flows from them. Our eyes and ears are gateways to our souls, shaping what we believe and desire. What we take in, what we watch, listen to, and dwell on, shapes us. The world normalises things that pull us away from holiness. Are we really looking to Jesus for truth, or are we letting worldly ideas creep in?
So let’s fix our eyes on Him and enter through the Gate - Jesus Himself - our only way to salvation and true life.
Jesus calls us to enter through Him, the Gate, into true life - life in all its fullness (John 10:10). But many around the world still struggle to experience that hope.
