A Lent devotional on John 8:12
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Hello, I’m Vivian, Founder and Director of Wakisa Ministries, one of WorldShare’s ministry partners. We are a beacon of light for young mothers who are lost in the darkness of unwanted or unplanned pregnancy. These girls, who are often pregnant as a result of abuse, find hope within the doors of our centre.
In John 8:12, Jesus says: "I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
This is the second of seven I AM declarations by Jesus and one which is central to the Christian faith. By saying that He is the Light of the World, Jesus is claiming to be the only source of spiritual light. And as Christians, we know this is true. We know that the only way to salvation is through the cross – Jesus’ life, death and resurrection.
Light is incredible. It only takes the light from a single lamp to illuminate a room, dispelling the darkness. As we acknowledge Jesus as the Light of the World, we invite his light into our lives, freeing us from spiritual darkness.
Through our work at Wakisa Ministries, young girls are supported through their pregnancies, taught how to care for their babies and given Christian counselling to help them heal from the trauma they’ve experienced. As these girls hear the Gospel, the light of Jesus reveals things that would otherwise be hidden in the darkness of their circumstances. Patricia’s story is just one example of how Jesus shines His light.
14-year-old Patricia was brought to Wakisa by her grandmother when she was six months pregnant. Patricia’s biological father had sexually abused her five times but her grandmother had made up a story for her to tell so her son couldn’t be implicated. One day after hearing the Gospel, Patricia gave her life to Jesus Christ and as a result, she was convicted of the lie. She decided to come clean and speak the truth about her pregnancy. After speaking the truth, she said she felt free in her spirit and happy about her salvation. Click here to find out more about Wakisa Ministries and to donate.
