JKPS: Serving Communities with Hope
16 January 2025
Our ministry partner, Jatiyo Kristiyo Prochar Samity (JKPS), continues to bring hope and practical support to vulnerable communities across eastern India. Their recent updates highlight steady progress in healthcare, clean water provision, leadership development, and support for children and young people.
One of the most consistent ways JKPS serves rural villages is through its monthly medical outreach. These clinics take essential healthcare directly to people who would otherwise struggle to access treatment, especially elderly residents, women, and children. In recent months more than one hundred people have received medical care and free medicines through these visits, preventing illness from worsening and supporting families who face difficult financial decisions.
Clean and reliable water remains a challenge in many of the communities JKPS serves. Their ongoing water projects have provided families with handpumps, submersible pumps, and household water filters that offer a safe and dependable supply. In one area alone, 38 filters were distributed to households that had long struggled with contaminated or inconsistent water sources. These simple, practical solutions continue to protect communities from waterborne disease and reduce the daily burden on households.
Recent monsoon flooding in parts of West Bengal caused sudden disruption to homes and livelihoods. JKPS responded quickly by providing dry food parcels for 124 people, helping families through the immediate aftermath and showing the love of Christ at a time of uncertainty and fear.
JKPS also continues to strengthen local churches and community groups through the Fulfilling the Task (FTT) training programme. A recent training brought together twenty-five leaders from two provinces for intensive study of the first two FTT modules. These leaders have already helped equip more than 360 people across sixteen fellowships, enabling them to share their faith with confidence and build up others in their communities. This expanding network of trained workers means the impact of the programme continues long after each session ends.
Alongside this, the Community Transformation Programme (CTP) is helping believers deepen their faith and apply Scripture to everyday life. The Seekers module recently began with eleven students, while twenty-six students are currently enrolled in the Believers module and fourteen in the Discipleship module. These online courses provide a lifeline to those who want to grow spiritually but cannot study full‑time, and they are helping men and women become confident, faithful witnesses in their local fellowships.
JKPS also held a special farewell for Rev Arun Karmakar, who served for thirty-six years as Principal of the Bethel Training Institute. His dedication shaped generations of students, and his legacy continues through the leaders now serving in churches and communities across the region.
Children and young people continue to benefit from the care and support offered through JKPS centres. Recent career counselling sessions guided forty beneficiaries as they explored study and employment options, giving them confidence to consider new possibilities and understand their individual strengths.
Independence Day celebrations were also held across the centres, bringing children together for flag‑hoisting, songs, drama, and creative performances that helped build their sense of unity, teamwork, and national identity. Teachers used the event as an opportunity to encourage gratitude and resilience, helping children reflect on the sacrifices made for the freedoms they enjoy.
Children later celebrated Teachers’ Day, expressing their appreciation through cards, flowers, and simple performances. These moments of joy strengthened relationships between children and staff and created a nurturing environment where young people feel supported and valued throughout the year.
Together, these updates show a ministry that is steady, compassionate, and committed to long‑term change. Through healthcare, clean water initiatives, training programmes, and the nurturing of young people, JKPS continues to reflect Christ’s love in practical and meaningful ways. Their work continues to bring hope to communities facing daily challenges, and we are grateful for all that God is doing through them.
