When Forgiveness Came Home: Sharon’s Story

08 December 2024

For 20 years, Wakisa Ministries has been a safe haven for teenage mothers in crisis, offering counselling and vocational training (like tailoring, cookery, and computer literacy), alongside life skills, spiritual care and family reconciliation. Each life transformed is a testimony of God’s faithfulness, and Sharon’s story is one of the most powerful.

At just 15, Sharon’s bright future was shattered by a brief, misguided relationship that left her pregnant. Her deeply religious family was devastated. Her father, overwhelmed by shame and fear of community judgment, cast her out of the home she loved. Alone and vulnerable, Sharon’s situation was reported to the police. It was at this critical moment that Wakisa Ministries stepped in, offering rescue and refuge.

From the day she arrived at the centre, Sharon showed remarkable resilience. She quickly became a natural leader among her peers, hardworking, disciplined, and eager to learn. She excelled in vocational classes, from tailoring maternity dresses to cookery and gardening, and participated fully in life skills sessions. Yet beneath her smile, a deep struggle persisted.

For months, Sharon wrestled with the trauma of rejection and confessed to hating her pregnancy, often calling her baby “a child of sin.”  While other girls celebrated the kicks of their babies, Sharon felt only dread.

Through patient counselling and daily devotions, a transformation began. One evening, Sharon stood and testified that she had finally accepted her child. The room erupted in celebration. That same night, Sharon went into labour and delivered a healthy baby girl at Wakisa’s maternity centre. Joy replaced fear, but uncertainty lingered. Her father’s anger made resettlement seem impossible.

'The baby stopped crying in his arms, a sign of acceptance and security.'

The breakthrough came on October 1st. After weeks of prayer, Sharon’s parents arrived at the centre, still burdened by shame and fear of what the community would say. During counselling, Sharon’s father held his granddaughter for the first time. In that moment, his hardened heart softened. Forgiveness and love flowed, and the atmosphere changed completely. The baby stopped crying in his arms, a sign of acceptance and security. Sharon and her baby went home that day, reunited with their family and ready to begin a new chapter.

Sharon’s story is a vivid reminder of why Wakisa exists: to offer hope, healing, and restoration. As they celebrate 20 years of God’s faithfulness, we give thanks for every life transformed and every family restored. Thank you for standing with us - your prayers and support make stories like Sharon’s possible.
