Hope Restored
Fleur's Journey from Despair to Renewal
Over the last year, we have followed the story of a young woman from Haiti, who we have called Fleur for security purposes. Here is her story:
Fleur has faced more difficulties in her short life than most can imagine. At 8 months pregnant, after grieving the death of her husband, she was forced out of her rented room and found herself homeless and thinking of taking her own life. Her story, however, is a journey from despair to hope and resilience, thanks to the support of PiFò Haiti, one of our ministry partners.
Hands and Feet of Jesus
When Emerson, PiFò Haiti’s programme manager, and his wife, Farah, found Fleur sleeping in the town square, they brought her to their home, providing her with food and shelter. They are a wonderful example of Christians who are the hands and feet of Jesus. However, the challenges didn’t stop there. Shortly after, Fleur was rushed to hospital with critically low haemoglobin levels – a life threatening situation for both her and her unborn baby.
In hospital, Fleur received a lifesaving blood transfusion and the necessary medication. Over the weekend, her condition improved, allowing her to return to Emerson and Farah’s care. Knowing that Fleur was struggling emotionally, the couple went the extra mile to lift her spirits and took her to the beach for a much-needed moment of joy (pictured left). They also bought her some new clothes.
A couple of weeks later, Fleur gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. However, without the resources to pay for a $400 C-section, her future was looking bleak. But through the generosity of donors, PiFò Haiti paid her hospital bills, ensuring she could welcome her baby into the world without fear of crippling debt and was able to leave the hospital safely. In Haiti, if you can't afford to pay your hospital bills, they do not let you leave, thereby increasing the debt owed.
Hope Restored
Today, Fleur is thriving. She has moved into a safe home with her daughter and is pursuing her dream of becoming a seamstress. Enrolled in sewing classes, she is learning the skills to build a sustainable future. PiFò Haiti has just provided her with the money to buy her own sewing machine, so here she is (video shown below), sewing in her own home. Praise God!
Volunteer Director of PiFò Haiti, Wendy, shared:
“Fleur went from wanting to end her life, pregnant and sleeping on a park bench to living on her own with her baby and taking classes to provide a future for her family. God is good.”
Please pray:
- For Fleur, her baby and their future
- For Emerson and his family
- For the work of PiFò Haiti, particularly with the very unstable political situation in Haiti
