From interrupted education to new opportunities

For many young mothers in Uganda, becoming pregnant can bring their education to an abrupt end. Continuing with school while caring for a child can seem impossible, particularly when family finances are already stretched or there is little practical support available.
Wakisa Ministries provides vulnerable young mothers with a safe place to receive care, counselling and practical support during pregnancy and following the birth of their babies. The young women can also develop skills, build their confidence and begin considering what the future might hold for them and their children.
Recent updates from Wakisa show how this care and encouragement can continue making a difference long after a young mother first arrives at the centre.
Returning to education after becoming a mother was a significant step, but Ruth continued with her studies and completed her advanced secondary education in 2022. The following year, she began a degree in Business Administration at Makerere University, specialising in Human Resource Management.
Ruth completed her studies in June 2026 and is now volunteering with Wakisa Ministries while she waits to graduate in January. By helping with administrative responsibilities, she is gaining practical experience and strengthening the skills she will need as she prepares to begin her career.
Other young mothers supported by Wakisa are also looking towards promising futures.
Aisha & Caroline
Aisha grew up as one of six children in a single-parent family. Her mother worked as a street trader to provide for them. After becoming pregnant at 17, Aisha continued to pursue her education with support from Wakisa. She completed secondary school and is now working as a shop assistant while caring for her five-year-old son. She is also preparing to study Tourism and Hospitality at Makerere University.
Caroline is the eldest of six children from a low-income farming family. Her education was interrupted when she became pregnant during secondary school, but Wakisa helped her return to her studies. She completed her secondary education in 2021 and is now working as a teacher while raising her young son. Her next goal is to begin a degree in Education, taking another important step towards the future she has worked hard to build.
Wakisa provided counselling, care and the opportunity for her to continue learning.
In 2016, Fatuma returned to school while also raising her son. She has since completed a degree in Business Studies with Education and is looking forward to graduating in January 2027.
