A Father’s Persistence
Braving war in his village, a father finds appropriate care for his daughter at HEAL Africa
Floribert is a father from DR Congo whose love and determination saved the life of his 11-year-old daughter, Judith.
Their story began with episodes of persistent fever in Judith. After five months of uncertainty, Floribert decided to take his daughter to Nyamilima hospital (North of Goma), where she was diagnosed with bone tuberculosis. She began treatment there. However, her condition deteriorated rapidly, forcing doctors to recommend an urgent transfer to HEAL Africa hospital in Goma.

The journey to Goma was a real ordeal for Floribert and his daughter. Coming from a territory in the midst of war, they had to face fear and cruelty along the way. At each checkpoint set up by warring factions - sometimes every 20 to 30 metres - Floribert had to pay a “passage fee”. This gruelling, risky, and costly journey drained his financial resources. Nevertheless, saving his daughter was more important than anything else.
HEAL Africa Hospital
On 30th July 2024, after days of travel and sacrifice, they finally arrived at the HEAL Africa Hospital in Goma, where Judith received appropriate treatment. However, already drained of financial resources from the journey, Floribert feared he would not be able to pay for his daughter’s medical bills. But thanks to a grant secured by WorldShare from a charitable trust, a significant portion of the costs was covered, relieving this exhausted father of his burdens.
On 11 September 2024, Floribert and Judith left the HEAL Africa Hospital to return home to Nyamilima, with a heart full of gratitude. He declared:
“Thanks to the generosity of HEAL Africa’s partners and the dedication of its doctors, my daughter has regained her health. This day will remain engraved in my memory as the beginning of a new life for her and for me”.
