Gaza Update: August 2025

11 August 2025

“Even ordinary actions can turn fatal.”

As the war in Gaza almost completes its second year, the humanitarian crisis continues to escalate. Hunger, displacement, and trauma are now daily realities for millions. Yet through your support, Christian Mission to Gaza (CMG) remains present, serving those most in need, often at great personal risk.

A Church Under Fire

On 18 July, the Latin Church in Gaza was struck by missiles, killing three members of the Christian community and injuring ten others, including a priest. This follows the October 2023 attack on the Greek Orthodox Church compound, where 18 people lost their lives.

These are not just statistics. They are our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Shadi Abu Dawood’s son, injured in the attack on the church compound, is now receiving treatment in Israel and improving. The other nine wounded are stable.

From Pastor Hanna Massad

In a recent message, Pastor Hanna shared:

“What once felt unimaginable has become daily reality. Hunger has become deadly. Even the search for food can cost a life.”

Since October 2023, official figures report that at least 170 people, 93 of them children, have died from starvation. But the real number is likely far higher. Between May and July, over 1,200 civilians were killed while trying to access food. Among them was a neighbour’s relative who never returned from a food run for his six children.

One young believer, discipled by a CMG leader, went to a food distribution site with his 32-year-old cousin. Only one came back. His cousin was shot in the neck and died instantly.

These are not isolated stories. They reflect the daily risks faced by ordinary people simply trying to survive.

CMG’s Ongoing Response

Despite the danger, CMG continues to provide:

  • Food and clean water to displaced families
  • Clothing and other basic necessities
  • Discipleship and pastoral care for believers under pressure

Thanks to your support, you can see in the video below that CMG recently fed 2,000 people and continues to reach those in desperate need.

What the UN Is Reporting

The latest UN updates confirm what CMG is witnessing on the ground:

  • Food prices have soared: In July 2025, the WFP reported that a 1kg bag of flour cost over $100 (£74), a staggering figure driven by extreme scarcity and market collapse. While prices have since eased slightly, flour still costs around $25/kg, compared to just $0.40/kg before the war. This inflation has made basic food staples inaccessible for most families. Many are surviving on one poor-quality meal a day, or none at all and some are forced to scavenge from rubbish to find food.
  • Famine thresholds breached: 81% of households report poor food consumption. In Gaza City, acute malnutrition has reached emergency levels.
  • Water crisis deepens: 90% of people lack access to clean drinking water. Sanitation systems have collapsed, and disease is spreading.
  • Children are suffering most: Over 9,200 children were diagnosed with acute malnutrition in July alone. Many are no longer receiving basic nutrition support.

What Daily Life Looks Like

Displaced families now divide their days between searching for food, water, firewood, and news of aid. One young man told CMG he gives his only pair of shoes to a friend who risks his life to collect flour. If the friend returns alive, he brings back two kilos.

This is what solidarity looks like in Gaza today.
