Emergency Ebola Appeal
HEAL Africa Hospital in Goma is once again facing an urgent and deeply difficult situation.
As Ebola spreads in eastern DR Congo, the team at HEAL Africa are continuing to care for those in need with courage, compassion and faith, despite the fear and uncertainty surrounding them. The World Health Organisation has declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. The virus involved is the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, and as of 19 May, 514 suspected cases and 136 deaths had been reported. There are currently no virus specific treatments or vaccines for this strain.
For HEAL Africa, this crisis is not distant. Two patients are currently being treated in the hospital’s Ebola isolation ward, and ten staff members who may have been exposed are now in isolation themselves and will need to be monitored for at least three weeks.
