Laos, Myanmar and Kerala have all recently been hit by severe flash flooding affecting over a million people. Three of our partner ministries are located in these areas and are providing vital relief aid, but they need your support.
Kerala has had 37% excess rainfall in just two and a half months and has been experiencing flooding since June, but this peaked dramatically last week. Nearly 400 people have died, thousands remain stranded and over one million are displaced. Many have taken shelter in thousands of relief camps across the state.
Our ministry partner, Bible Faith Mission are providing relief supplies to marginalised and unreached victims in isolated areas. Their churches are gathering together to hand out food packages and other essentials to those in need.
In July, a dam under construction in the Sanamxay District of Attapeu collapsed, causing immediate flash flooding through many villages. Five billion cubic metres of water was released – the equivalent of more than two million Olympic swimming pools. Homes, roads and bridges were swept away. Several lives have been claimed, hundreds are missing and more than six thousand people have lost their homes.
Our Singapore alliance partner is working with local Christians on the ground in Laos to provide food, cooking utensils and clean water. The team are providing these essentials to some of the most remote and difficult areas, accessing them by helicopter. Two more trips are planned over the next few weeks to continue providing essentials to those in desperate need of support.
Towards the end of July, days of heavy monsoon rains flooded villages in central and southern Myanmar forcing more than 100,000 people to flee their homes. The floods have shut down roads and submerged villages, leaving communities stranded. Children and families have been left clinging to rooftops to escape the rising water levels.
Our ministry partner Word of Hope, are providing relief aid to families in need. Groups from their churches have been gathering and reaching out to some of the most vulnerable families, to distribute food and clean water. They are in desperate need of blankets, mosquito nets, clothes and more food packages.
Our ministry partners are on the ground in these areas and responding to the desperate needs of so many affected families. To continue providing relief aid to those in need, they need your help. Your gift will help to provide essentials and bring hope to someone who has lost everything.
Please pray for the victims of the flood disasters in Kerala, Laos and Myanmar. Pray that God will protect them, provide for them and be close to them as they fight for survival. Ask that God will work through our ministry partners and the other aid agencies working on the ground to provide support. Pray that it will be an opportunity for many people to hear and respond to the good news of Jesus and that their lives be transformed for the Kingdom of God.
