We wanted to let you know about an urgent request from our ministry partner in the Democratic Republic of Congo, HEAL Africa.

On the evening of Saturday 22 May, just outside the city of Goma, Mount Nyiragongo erupted with no warning. Lava flowed towards Rwanda and into the outskirts of Goma, a population of about 2 million people. Thankfully, the HEAL Africa hospital and most of the city were spared. However, more than 400,000 people were forced to leave their homes and, as a result, many children were separated from their parents.

HEAL Africa has been working with an interagency group of humanitarian organisations and has taken the lead on identifying displaced children in the villages and cities along Lake Kivu.

HEAL Africa aims to provide supervision, guidance, and reintegration for these children by:

Identifying children who have been separated from their parents

Providing food and shelter, initially through a network of foster families

Recruiting a team of supervisors to oversee and care for these children

Providing a framework for the supervision of children (tents, fence, playground, toys)

Organising trauma sessions for children who have been affected by the eruption

Increasing media awareness to find families of children separated from their parents

Reintegrating children with their parents (or through the Division of Social Affairs)

Could you help us support children in need impacted by the volcanic eruption in DR Congo?

Please would you prayerfully consider giving to this emergency appeal today, to support HEAL Africa as they reach out to help displaced children. Please would you also hold HEAL Africa and these dear children (and their families) in your prayers at this difficult time. Thank you.
