WorldShare launches Haiti quake appeal

On 12 January 2010, a 7.0 earthquake and multiple aftershocks struck Haiti, bringing widespread destruction in Port-au-Prince and around the Caribbean island nation. A massive international response got underway, amid chaotic and traumatic scenes on the ground and a death toll of over 200,000 people. WorldShare has been working through our existing Haitian partners to bring practical and spiritual help and hope for the future.

Update No. 1 - 18/01/2010

The capital city, Port-au-Prince, was among the most badly affected locations. The Presidential Palace and UN premises were among badly damaged or destroyed buildings.

Video footage taken immediately after the quake from nearby hills, looking down on Port-au-Prince, showed clouds of dust caused by collapsing buildings, covering the city like dense fog.

For a number of years, WorldShare has been in partnership with Haitian Calvary International Ministries, with whom we have an active ChildAid programme.

As well as encouraging local church growth, HCIM runs schools on the island of La Gonave, located just off the Haitian mainland and a short distance from the earthquake epicentre. ChildAid supports the education of around 225 children in Anse-a-Galets, at HCIM's Calvary School.

WorldShare managed this morning (13 January) to contact Luckner Stimphil (HCIM director) by phone. "A lot of people we know are dead," he reports. "There is no contact to La Gonave, where there is no electricity. TV/radio are down."

Haiti is the western hemisphere's poorest country. With widespread poverty, and infrastructure and communications difficulties a feature of life there prior to the earthquake due to the political and economic situation, the earthquake will be a further terrible blow to the country.

How you can help
